Citizenship Services

Canadian citizenship is an important milestone and the final step for many immigrants who have chosen to make Canada their home. Citizenship provides additional rights and privileges, including the ability to vote, apply for a Canadian passport, and participate fully in Canadian society.

To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, applicants generally must have permanent resident status, meet residency requirements, demonstrate knowledge of English or French, and pass a citizenship test on Canada’s history, values, and institutions. Each case is unique, and the process can involve careful review of personal history, travel records, and supporting documents.

Our Citizenship Services Include:

  • Canadian Citizenship Applications
  • Citizenship Certificate (Proof of Citizenship) Applications

Main Citizenship Services and Pathways

Apply for Canadian Citizenship

Most individuals apply through a grant of citizenship, which involves submitting an application, meeting eligibility criteria, paying required fees, and — for many — completing a citizenship test and interview.

Successful applicants are invited to take the Oath of Citizenship at a formal ceremony.

Citizenship Test and Ceremony

Applicants may be required to:

  • Take a written knowledge test
  • Attend an interview to assess understanding of Canada’s history, institutions, and values

Citizenship is granted through the Oath of Citizenship, marking the official transition to full civic participation in Canada.

Proof of Canadian Citizenship

If you were born in Canada or to Canadian parents abroad, you may need to apply for a citizenship certificate as proof of your status.

This certificate is often required to:

  • Apply for a Canadian passport
  • Access government services
  • Resolve questions of legal status

On December 15, 2025, Canada’s citizenship law changed. The passage of Bill C-3 into law now provides a pathway for thousands of people around the world, who were once blocked by the 1st generation rule, to apply for proof of Canadian citizenship.

Resume Canadian Citizenship

If you previously renounced your Canadian citizenship, you may be eligible to apply to resume Canadian citizenship.

This involves demonstrating your eligibility and submitting an application to restore your citizenship status.

Renounce Canadian Citizenship

If you wish to give up your Canadian citizenship — for example, due to dual citizenship restrictions — you must follow a formal legal process to renounce you Canadian citizenship voluntarily.

Confirm Your Status or Rule Changes

If you’re unsure whether you’re already a Canadian citizen or how new rules affect you, we can help you:

  • Assess your status
  • Interpret regulatory changes
  • Identify the best next steps
